About

When not covered in a gray cloak, spun of wind, rain, and dark clouds, one might spot the isle of Baranof. Where lies the furthest westward community of all of South East Alaska- the amazing town of Sitka! Fronted by the mighty Pacific Ocean, marked by the majestic snow covered volcano Mount Edgecumbe. Sitka (by my opinion and many others) is one of the most beautiful and wild places in the entire world!

Just a glimpse of Sitka’s rich history- Sitka is where the US “Transfer Ceremony” of the purchase of Alaska from Russia happened in 1867. Taken from the indigenous Tlingit people, “The Russians forced their way upon Sitka in 1804 -- radically changing the Tlingits' lifestyle -- to make money in the sea otter industry. Years later, when that dried up, Russia sold the territory to the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million, or about 2 cents an acre -- packed up and headed home. But many Russian influences remain today.” From Sitka: America's Tiny Colonial Russian Town, by Sharon Whitley Larsen. We will link more articles and information about Sitka’s rich history below.

Welcome to your Sitka Home.

Our goal when designing Harbor Mountain House was comfort and to provide our guests a place of relaxation after a long day of travel to Southeast Alaska. A place that feels like your Sitka home. Everything is clean and thoughtfully laid out for your arrival.

Sink into the giant sectional couch with multiple recliners and enjoy a movie after a long day of fishing. Refresh in the spacious bathroom upstairs with plenty of light and beautiful tile work from local talent. Downstairs has an additional half bath. There are several workstations throughout the house when one needs a quiet space to work or read.

A full kitchen is stocked with everything you need to cook up some of Sitka’s famous seafood. Have a local brew upon the huge live edge wood bar. The house is regionally decorated with local art, antique fishing gear, books about the area, and hand-picked items that reflect the Southeast experience. Note the quality fixtures, and mindful accessories with Smart Tv’s in every room.

Upstairs get some restful sleep on quality mattresses with a balance of support and pressure relief.

The property is nestled below Harbor Mountain and linked to Sitka’s incredible Cross Trail so you can get right into Baranof’s Tongass National Forest just outside the front door. The Cross Trail traverses the toe-slope of the mountains all along the edge of Sitka. Many different ecosystems may be seen along the route, muskeg, forested wetlands, old growth timber and second growth forest. A beautiful bridge crosses spectacular waterfalls at Cascade Creek that is just a short walk from the property.

Relax on the front porch or open a window and listen to the sound of Cascade Creek while reading a book. A BBQ is available in the back patio to grill and chill while visiting with friends and family. Enjoy the comfort of Harbor Mountain House. Welcome to Sitka.
